“It is the little things that citizens do. That will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.” — Prof. Wangari Maathai
On 8th October 2004, Prof. Wangari Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, recognised for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.
Through the Green Belt Movement, she transformed tree planting into a powerful grassroots movement, showing the world that a single seed, planted with purpose, can grow into something much bigger.
Today,G-MS joins the world in remembering and commemorating the incredible legacy of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai.
Her little thing was planting trees. Our little thing is continuing to plant and nurturing them .
This Mazingira Day, 10th October 2026, we carry that spirit forward in Kenya Njeru Kangema, Murang’a County—planting trees, cleaning our surroundings and creating greener spaces for generations to come.
Small Seeds. Lasting Impact.
