The latest 2026 Global Forest Watch (GFW) data gives us a reason to pause, reflect and, most importantly, act.
According to the report, Kenya had approximately 2.6 million hectares of natural forest in 2020. In 2025 alone, the country lost about 5,500 hectares of natural forest, associated with an estimated 2.2 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Looking at the bigger picture, Kenya lost approximately 410,000 hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2025 — about 12% of the country’s tree-cover area in 2000.
These are not just numbers.
🌿 When we lose forests, we lose much more than trees.
Forests help regulate our climate, protect water sources, prevent soil erosion, support biodiversity, store carbon and provide livelihoods for communities. They are also essential to the health and resilience of future generations.
And while planting trees is critical, we must remember that tree planting is only the beginning. A newly planted seedling cannot immediately replace the ecological functions of a mature forest.
We need to plant.
We need to nurture.
We need to protect.
We need to restore. 🌱
🌱 THIS IS WHY GMSF IS TAKING ACTION
At Gakami Mustard Seed Foundation (GMSF), we believe environmental conservation must move beyond conversations and become a responsibility shared by communities, institutions, businesses and individuals.
Our goal is to grow trees that survive, restore ecosystems, strengthen communities and leave a healthier Kenya for generations to come.
We are encouraging communities to embrace indigenous and fruit trees, restore degraded areas, protect existing trees and take responsibility for the trees they plant.
Because one tree matters. One community matters. One action matters.
🇰🇪 Kenya still has an opportunity to restore what has been lost and protect what remains — but that opportunity requires action today.
The question is no longer whether we can afford to restore our forests.
The question is: can we afford not to?
🌳 Plant a tree. Nurture it. Protect it. Let it become part of a forest.
Small Seeds. Lasting Impact.
