What happens when we throw away old phones, broken laptops and damaged electronics carelessly?
Electronic waste (e-waste) is more than unwanted gadgets. When improperly disposed of, it can cause serious harm to our environment and our health.
How does improper e-waste disposal affect the environment?
Pollutes water: Toxic substances can leach into rivers, streams and groundwater, threatening aquatic life and water quality.
Contaminates soil: Harmful chemicals and heavy metals can accumulate in the soil, affecting soil health and plant growth.
Pollutes the air: Burning electronic waste releases toxic fumes and harmful particles into the atmosphere.
Harms wildlife: Pollutants can enter food chains, affecting animals and disrupting ecosystems.
Threatens human health: Exposure to hazardous substances can affect the health of waste handlers and nearby communities.
What can we do?
Repair and reuse electronics whenever possible , Take old batteries and electronic devices to authorised collection and recycling points, Never burn or dump e-waste in open spaces, rivers or ordinary dumping sites, Create awareness and encourage responsible waste management in our communities.
At Gakami Mustard Seed Foundation , we recognise that protecting our environment goes beyond planting trees. It also means managing our waste responsibly, safeguarding our water and soil, and protecting the ecosystems that sustain life.
