El Niño Preparedness Starts with You: Stay Safe, Stay Ready

Recent forecasts from the Kenya Meteorological Service (KMS) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicate an increased likelihood of El Niño conditions during 2026, which could bring above-average rainfall to parts of Kenya. While rainfall is essential for replenishing water sources, supporting agriculture, and restoring ecosystems, it also increases the risk of flooding, landslides, waterborne diseases, and damage to homes and infrastructure.

We believe that preparedness saves lives. Every individual and community has a role to play in reducing disaster risks.

Here are some important safety tips during periods of heavy rainfall:
🌧️ Avoid walking, driving, or riding through flooded roads. Fast-moving floodwaters can be deeper and more dangerous than they appear.
⚡ If water enters your home, switch off electricity at the main power source and unplug electrical appliances to reduce the risk of electrocution.
🌳 Stay away from trees, power lines, swollen rivers, streams, and drainage channels during storms.
🏡 If you live in a flood-prone area, move to higher ground early and follow guidance from local authorities.
💧 Drink safe, clean water and maintain good hygiene after flooding to help prevent diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

As we prepare for the possibility of increased rainfall, we must also strengthen our long-term resilience by protecting forests, restoring degraded landscapes, improving water management, and promoting climate-smart community practices.
