Africa’s trees provide food, shelter, medicine, livelihoods and habitats for wildlife,quietly supporting communities and ecosystems every day.
Here are five remarkable African trees and some of the roles they play:
● African Baobab – Adansonia digitata
Known as the “upside-down tree,” the baobab provides nutritious fruit and has numerous traditional uses. Its remarkable size and longevity make it one of Africa’s most recognisable trees.
● Fever Tree – Vachellia xanthophloea
With its distinctive yellow-green bark, the Fever Tree is commonly found around wetlands and areas with groundwater, contributing to riverine and wetland ecosystems.
● Sausage Tree – Kigelia africana
Famous for its large, sausage-shaped fruits, this tree provides food and habitat for wildlife and has a long history of traditional uses.
● Marula – Sclerocarya birrea
Its nutritious fruits support both people and wildlife, while its seeds provide valuable oil used in food and cosmetics. Marula also contributes to rural livelihoods.
●Mopane – Colophospermum mopane
The Mopane provides durable timber, firewood and food resources, including the well-known mopane caterpillar, which supports livelihoods and nutrition in parts of southern Africa.
